How Generali streamlined insurance operations with FinqTreasury

Generali Romania case study: treasury automation with FinqTreasury

Contents

1. Client Background: Generali Romania

Generali Romania, a leading player in the Romanian insurance market, implemented FinqTreasury — Finqware’s treasury management automation platform — to address critical operational challenges inherent to the insurance industry and achieve significant backoffice optimisation as well as real-time financial visibility across its organization.

The insurance sector is defined by a high-volume, compliance-intensive environment, which is why insurers such as GRAWE Romania have also automated their treasury with FinqTreasury. Managing substantial collections from mandatory insurance products (PAD and RCA), recurring premium payments, and complex claims settlement workflows are among the most significant daily operational challenges. Generali Romania required a solution that could centralize banking data across multiple partner institutions, automate reconciliation processes, and provide real-time liquidity insights without requiring extensive technical infrastructure or individual bank integrations.

2. The Challenge

Before partnering with Finqware, Generali Romania’s operational flow was hindered by legacy banking interactions and manual processes. The BO team had to manually export bank statements from various banking applications and store them to a dedicated location from where an automatic job would perform actual import into the core system, representing a repetitive task.

Furthermore, the standard T+1 settlement time created an information gap. This delay meant other departments could face delays, leading to additional internal requests for various confirmations in order to complete the operational processes.

The following areas were impacted by the manual processing of bank statements:

  1. Collections and policy management
  2. Month-end closing constraints
  3. Fraud detection and AML compliance
  4. Claims processing impact

3. The Solution: FinqTreasury

Generali Romania deployed FinqTreasury as a cloud-based treasury management system leveraging regulated Open Banking APIs to establish direct connectivity with all partner banks across Romania. The implementation followed Finqware’s standardized integration approach.

Technical Architecture

  1. Single API integration providing aggregated connectivity to all Romanian, as well as other EU countries banks without requiring individual bank agreements or batch messaging infrastructure;
  2. Consent-based data access initiated by authorized users without capturing bank login credentials, ensuring compliance with PSD2 and PSR regulations;
  3. Azure Cloud deployment with continuous security updates and enterprise-grade data protection.

Integration Scope

  1. Multi-bank, multi-currency account aggregation across all Generali Romania banking relationships, tens of bank accounts and thousands of daily transactions;
  2. Real-time transaction feeds with on-demand synchronization frequency;
  3. ERP integration enabling automated payment allocation and reconciliation workflows.

4. Implementation

What was different from other TMS

For Generali Romania, FinqTreasury was up and running in just a few days, with all banks connected and setup done for various user roles and permissions across the organization. That was possible due to Finqware’s extensive bank connectivity coverage in terms of built-in API integrations with all relevant banks.

Data for balances and transactions was automatically refreshed several times a day, with on-demand synchronization available every 10 minutes, since day one.

Unlike a classical TMS, Generali Romania benefited from real-time cash visibility in a single dashboard from the first day after on-boarding.

To prepare the internal operational system integration, Generali’s users conducted a thorough data analysis and validation process, in order to ensure that data was 100% accurate and complete as compared to official bank statements. Indeed, a few areas of discrepancies were identified for some of the banks and Finqware acted as an end-to-end service provider, raising those issues with the respective banks and following through on their resolution.

For instance, one of the largest banks in Romania was not exposing some important collector accounts through the PSD2 API, but following our joint case submission, together with Finqware, Generali obtained a substantial upgrade made by that bank to its open banking API. Once a bank’s data had been successfully validated as accurate and complete, its integration into our operational system was easily fulfilled.

Finance team reviewing automated bank reconciliation results

One of the main challenges was connecting multiple banks and internal systems while ensuring reliable and consistent data. A key lesson learned is that Open Banking delivers the greatest value when it supports multiple business areas, helping teams access accurate financial information faster and automate everyday processes.

5. Results and benefits

The adoption of Open Banking standards created an opportunity to modernize financial processes, increase automation, and improve the quality and availability of banking data across the organization.

The project supports a more connected ecosystem between banking partners, Finqware’s Open Banking platform, and Generali Romania’s internal systems. It was designed to deliver tangible business benefits by reducing manual activities, accelerating payment processing, improving data accuracy, and making financial information available to operational teams in near real time. This combination of innovation, efficiency, and scalability made Open Banking a strategic initiative for Generali Romania.

Back Office Transformation

Up to 100% reduction in time spent exporting bank statements
FinqTreasury completely removed the operational effort previously allocated to exporting bank statements from banking applications and importing them into the core accounting system. Finance teams no longer maintain individual banking platform access or manage file transfer processes across multiple institutions.
Up to 100% reduction in transaction allocation errors
Manual processing errors in transaction allocation were eliminated through automated data ingestion and standardized transaction formatting. The platform’s data normalization capabilities ensure consistent transaction categorization regardless of originating bank.
Payment visibility improved from T+1 settlement cycles to intraday availability
Automatic payment allocation rates exceeding 75%
Generali Romania achieved significant operational autonomy across business departments. The frequency of inter-departmental requests for payment confirmation or financial situation interpretation decreased substantially, allowing finance teams to focus on strategic activities rather than operational support.
Reduction of False Reminders
Rapid payment allocation ensures policy balances update in real-time, improving the accuracy of dunning notifications, cancellation candidates, and maturity date selections. The incidence of customers receiving unnecessary payment reminders after completing their obligations decreased, reducing call center workload and customer uncertainties. Email explanations and corrective communications were minimized as financial data accuracy improved.
Smoother Month End
Quality control activities transitioned from hampered execution to real-time monitoring, providing extended time windows for technical month-end closing processes. Finance teams can now perform reconciliation validation and exception handling throughout the month rather than concentrating efforts in compressed post-statement availability periods.

Sales department benefits

Faster payment verification
Sales teams access payment confirmation reports in near real-time through dedicated query interfaces, particularly critical for mandatory insurance products (PAD and RCA). This capability provides fraud prevention assurance during policy issuance processes, as payment verification occurs before policy activation.
Automated payment tracking
All insurance products benefit from enhanced payment tracking, with mandatory products receiving priority monitoring due to regulatory compliance requirements. Sales operations can confidently proceed with policy documentation knowing payment status is verified through automated treasury workflows.

Claims processing improvements

Accelerated payment allocation timelines
Accelerated payment allocation timelines diminished scenarios where claim files were rejected pending financial situation clarification. Claims departments process submissions more efficiently as payment verification occurs within hours.

AML and Compliance enhancement

Faster fraud detection
Following transaction classification modifications by Finqware, Generali Romania will gain the ability to better classify transactions. Suspicious transaction verification now operates on real-time data feeds, enabling immediate investigation of potentially fraudulent activities.
More accurate AML alerts
Unified transaction formatting across all banking sources increased the accuracy of daily and monthly AML alerts. Standardized data enables more precise rule-based monitoring and reduces false positive rates in compliance reporting.

Customer satisfaction increase

Customer satisfaction improved as a direct result of operational efficiency gains across all departments referenced above, based on simpler, smoother and faster customer service interactions.

6. Strategic value

The FinqTreasury implementation positioned Generali Romania’s financial infrastructure for scalable growth while aligning with corporate governance standards and digitalization priorities. The platform’s Open Banking foundation ensures regulatory compliance with PSD2 and PSR requirements while providing flexibility for future expansion across additional European markets.

The successful implementation of Open Banking, in partnership with Finqware, has established a strong foundation for future automation and digital innovation at Generali Romania. Beyond the operational benefits already achieved, the initiative could open new opportunities in areas such as treasury and cash management, while providing a scalable model that can support similar transformations across the region.
